Straight From The South Bay Blog! - "Combat Negative Behaviors with Awareness."

Posted on December 18, 2013 at 10:40 AM

We loved this blog post on the South Bay Wellness Blog, titled "Combat negative behaviors with awareness." By Carole and Denise, Reidiant Light.

To begin to recognize negative behaviors, one can practice generating more awareness and insightfulness. After each experience, stop for a moment to recognize what occurred in the experience. When things do not turn out as positive as you would have liked, try to identify how things could have gone differently in order to achieve a better outcome. Here are some ways to do that:

a) Create a daily journal. Write down your experiences each day.

b) At the end of each week, review your journal.

c) After reviewing the journal weekly, make a list of what you do want and what you don’t want in your life.

d) Start to make these positive changes in your life. For example, take one thing you don’t like about yourself and start to create positive changes. Don’t move on to the next change until you have reached the results you desire. One day at a time. You are always in control over your life. Only you can make these positive changes. Hypnosis works so well to help you move forward in your life as long as you are active in working on the resolution.

This blog really helps us realize the power of positivity. It teaches us not to dwell on the negativity in life. Every hardship we may face can be a challenge, but one that can inspire growth and increased self awareness. Try new things, get inspired and start living a healthier, happier life!

Suffolk County Legislator, Bill Lindsay's "Shed The Meds" is a Huge Success!

Posted on December 10, 2013 at 10:30 AM

(Sayville, NY-December 7, 2013) On Saturday, December 7th, Legislator-Elect Bill Lindsay III, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Community Ambulance Company, the South Shore Community Organization, and the YES Prevention Program co-sponsored a "Shed-the-Meds" initiative that assisted residents in the successful disposal of over 60 pounds of expired or unused medications and over 30 hypodermic needles.

“When my father passed away, my mother and I were left with many of his prescriptions drugs and nowhere to safely get rid of them,” said Legislator-Elect Bill Lindsay III. “The efforts of these community groups to collect and properly dispose of prescription drugs was extremely helpful, not only for my family, but for all residents who hope to live in a safe and drug-free community.”

Non-medical use of prescription and over-the-counter medication remains a significant part of the drug problem here on Long Island. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, over 50 percent of people who abuse prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons obtained them from friends or relatives with permission and for free. Unwanted or expired medications left in the home could increase opportunities for drug abuse, drug diversion, and accidental poisonings.

“It is my hope that the success of this program will prevent medications from getting into the wrong hands and helps to reduce the number of overdoses within our communities,” said Community Ambulance Company Chief Jamie Atkinson. The Community Ambulance Company serves the communities of Bayport, Bohemia, Oakdale, Sayville and West Sayville. In 2012, they responded to over 160 overdose calls and have already responded to over 140 overdose calls this year.

Deputy Sheriffs were also in attendance to distribute home drug testing kits to parents and residents and properly transport the collection of prescription drugs to their incinerator. Medications brought to the Sheriff’s Office through programs such as “Shed the Meds” are incinerated on a monthly basis.

The return can easily be considered to be one of the two most important shots in tennis. When your opponent serves, you want to hit a return that will allow you in the best-case scenario to take control over the point or in the worst-case scenario remain in the point and give yourself a chance to win it.

MELVILLE New Firehouse Blazes Green Path

District aims for LEED-Silver ranking on its new substation

By Danny Schrafel

Melville Fire District officials broke ground on a

new, environmentally friendly, $4-milllion substation Saturday.

The one-story substation, located off Route 110 on Amityville Road near the Northern State Parkway, has a 8,623-square-foot footprint on 0.83 acres, and includes a partial cellar, a truck room doubled in size and improved ventilation systems.

District officials said the cost is in the area of $4 million, which will be drawn from Melville FD’s capital reserve fund.

Melville FD Chief Michael Carrieri said the new facility would bring immediate safety improvements for volunteers using the facility.

“The firehouse we had before was very, very small, especially the truck room,” Carrieri said. “These guys were gearing up one foot away from the side of the truck when the truck was rolling out – it’s very dangerous.”

The facility, which will be one of Melville’s three substations, will also provide additional training and storage space for volunteers.

Not only is the facility conscious of the volunteers who will use it, it is also being built to be environmentally friendly.

Jimmy Carchietta, a representative of the Cotocan Group, the project’s LEED consulting firm, is expecting the substation to receive Silver certification.

“We’re setting a benchmark for the Town of Huntington… we’re setting a benchmark for Long Island, really,” added Robert Rodrigues, site supervisor for the construction management firm, Alden Group.

The path to LEED ranking began right after demolition, officials explained. Excavation for the new substation began on Monday.

“We’ll be recycling the existing building and using all that material to come back to the site as base material,” Carchietta said. “We’re also going to be also recycling the bank run that comes out of this facility, and that’s going to go to the concrete plant.”

High-efficiency equipment, which will reduce the use of electricity, water and heat, is also being incorporated to limit the ongoing environmental impact.

Officials are hoping the exterior will be complete by November, allowing crews to work through the winter on the interior and finish the project by July 2014.
